Repetition and order

blue

I have always found tremendous comfort in organizing and arranging things. Whenever things are really difficult for me, or I'm going through an emotional time, I always find myself engaging in huge, repetitive projects. For example, I might do a 1000 piece puzzle. Or, start a 60,000 stitch embroidery piece. Sometimes, just buying the embroidery floss and arranging each skein on its own plastic card comforts me. (By the way, lately, I have done all of the above.) :)

Recently, I've been creating a Flickr set of DMC floss color swatches. I've never found a site that has the floss colors arranged to my liking, in a way that I can easily search and see every color at once. So, in my spare time, I've found the images and used 2-3 different charts to add color names. I originally had the intention of scanning all my own floss, but I had to stop myself. Knowing my personality, sometimes I have to stop myself from tasks that are too Herculean and weird. :)

What about you? Do any of you out there have odd quirks that bring you comfort?

I like to organize to help me cope as well, though for me it is usually mental / paper/ pencil organization. I list, and list, and list, and list. I list just for fun (to help with the stress) and for no reason at all other than that.

I wish my organization-thing was more productive around the house LOL!

I've liked organizing things since I was a little girl of about 4. I remember arranging most of my toys (I didn't have many, really) on a blanket in a 'just so' manner in the living room! I too am nuts about arranging floss in my various boxes. I also love LARGE needlework projects and find more joy in the process than in the completion. I have Angel of Love in my stash, in fact...similar to the project you showed in the link. I think it's interesting how we all have some sort of quirk, and isn't it fun to see that others can relate to our quirks! Sigh. I wish someone else would come organize our cupboards.I much prefer little floss boxes.

Though it never is, I think that everything has to be just perfect even before I get started on it. Unfortunately that has been the cause of little progress in anything I do. It seems that I am conforted just by the very thought of making or doing something and all my energy spills into preparing then when I finally get around to the project itself it isn't long before I'm anxious and thinking of another. You expect great things from perfectionism but in reality it is a curse.

I love arranging embroidery floss too, there is something therapeutic about it. It feels nice, it's pretty and cheerful and it always looks amazing when it's all tidy.

i actually do this all the time. not just to cope with an emotional situation or relief stress but also to stop myself from getting stress. i love organizing things around the house like books, cds, furniture. but i think embroidery floss is my ultimate favorite too. it's just so pretty and cheerful once it's all together in a box it looks like a color chart.

i'm going to have to check out that chart that you're making. it's good to know you're doing well :)

I bleach and sanitize my Whole place. In fact that's what I did yesterday. It makes me feel like I can grasp some control in my sometimes out of control life.

Tehee, i'm a cleaner. I clean when i'm stressed out which is very good for my house, especially because when i'm feeling unmotivated having tonns of junk around the place just depresses me and makes me even more unmotivated!!

I clean and cook when I am a bit frazzled. Actually embroidery used to calm me down tremendously too..I haven't been up to much lately but I need to do something..something weird I do is try and get the fortune cookie paper out without opening the fortune cookie. I guess I kind of try and make the impossible possible at times and I can be super patient while trying to accomplish that task. I am weird I know..lol

I'm not very well organised but I do find myself starting all sorts of large projects or temporarily obsessed with something. Right now I'm addicted to the long-short stitch and variegated floss. :) I've bookmarked your flickr set of flosses, thanks.
